We are pleased to announce the release of Radiator Carrier Module version 1.9. Radiator Carrier Module is the Radiator Diameter server component and provides the basis for all our Diameter extensions. The new 1.9 release includes major fixes and improvements for the Radiator Diameter server.

New usability improvements

  • Fix Unix stream server to correctly set socket file number to avoid causing high CPU usage in GBA/BSF.
  • Fix and enhance decoding of 3GPP-User-Location-Info and decoding of 3GPP-MS-Timezone. 3GPP-User-Location-Info is no longer decoded in place. The decoded value is instead added as OSC-3GPP-User-Location-Info.
  • Fix a memory leak caused by timed out Diameter answers.

A full list of changes can be found in the revision history.

Who should update?

Radiator Carrier Module 1.9 is recommended for all Radiator deployments with Diameter features enabled. The new release is available for all customers with active support contracts for Radiator Service Provider Pack, Radiator SIM Pack, Radiator Policy and Charging Pack and Radiator GBA/BSF Pack. You can find the Radiator Carrier downloads and repositories at the Radiator downloads page.

Radiator Service Provider Pack 1.8 released!

We are happy to announce that Radiator Service Provider Pack (formerly known as Radiator Carrier Pack) has been released!

The main new development is a new Diameter relay functionality. With Diameter relay, incoming Diametet traffic load can be distributed to multiple instances. The workers can be optionally made visible only as a single Diameter node to the rest of the Diameter nodes. This enhances Diameter performance when Radiator is used as 3GPP AAA server or in other use cases. For the relay functionality, we have also provided configuration examples, for Radiator SIM Pack, Radiator 3GPP AAA Server and Radiator Policy and Charging Pack.

At the same time, new release contains performance enhancements for Diameter protocol and enhanced logging for Diameter request and answers messages. More info can be found out from Radiator Service Provider Pack revision history.

Using Radiator as the flexible, powerful AAA for FTTH service providers

Recently, we have seen a big rise in the number with projects where service providers are implementing new FTTH (Fibre to the Home) services – using different PON (Passive optical network) technologies, such as GPON, XG-PON1, XGS-PON. Based on different estimates for consumer services in the industry, high-performance fibre access is needed more than ever.

Because of this, one the most common new use cases for Radiator AAA server software, and especially to our Radiator Service Provider Pack is the flexible and high-powered AAA for FTTH operators – that may also run fixed line and WiFi hotspot operations at the same time. With our flexible licensing options, these Radiator installations can be run either by service providers themselves, or they can use a managed service provided by a 3rd party.

Often these enterprise use cases also include private APN (Access Point Name) service for their enterprise customers. We are happy to tell more about our experiences on providing Radiator to different environments and use cases.

With the experience from a wide range of use cases, the key benefit of Radiator is flexibility in different network infrastructures – especially when integrating AAA with different technological generations. Readymade configurations are available, as well as support for different back-ends and logging and management solutions. As we are actively participating in different standardisation efforts, Radiator is always up-to-date with the latest industry practices and security developments.

Radiator SIM Module 2.6 released

We are pleased to announce the release 2.6 of Radiator SIM Module. This release includes 3GPP emergency call support and overall enhanced 3GPP AAA Server support, as well as a number of enhancements and bug fixes.

Customers with valid download access contracts can download updated software packages from our downloads site. Please note that Radiator 4.24 or later and Radiator Carrier Module 1.6 or later are required.

If you would like to renew your download access contract, or need professional assistance with updating or migrating, please contact sales@radiatorsoftware.com and a member of our sales team will be happy to assist.

Revision 2.6 detailed updates and fixes:

  • Invalid APN formats are now rejected early.
  • Included APN match in S6b authorisation checks.
  • Fixed a crash in 3GPP AAA Server triggered by retransmitted messages.
  • Updated identity handling with IMSI encryption based on observed client behaviour.
  • RAT-Type for SWx requests is now set to the value received over SWm defaulting to VIRTUAL. Previously WLAN was always used by 3GPP AAA Server.
  • 3GPP-Charging-Characteristics is now copied to SWm answers when available. Subscription-Id was not added to SWm AAA messages after the user profile was updated by HSS with Push-Profile Request.
  • AAA-Failure-Indication is now sent over SWx to HSS. Previously the VSA was ignored when received from an ePDG.
  • Terminal-Information is now added to SWx requests as required by 29.273 version 13 and later.
  • Enhanced 3GPP AAA Server support to cover 29.273 version 15.4.0. The main behaviour change is S6b triggered PGW registration which is no longer done as often. This was clarified in 29.273 13.4.0 correction CP-160220 CR 0457.
  • Emergency services for authenticated users are now supported by 3GPP AAA Server. Support for emergency services needs to be enabled with a new configuration flag parameter EmergencyServices. When EmergencyServices parameter is set and SQL is used for a session database, one new column and SQL query modifications are needed.
  • Updated 3GPPP AAA Server SWm, SWx and S6b dictionaries for 29.273 version 15.4.0.
  • Crypt::Rijndael is no longer required when Radius::UtilXS release 2.2 or later and Radiator 4.25 or later is installed.
  • 3GPP AAA Server SQL and Redis based session backends no longer trigger unnecessary lookups and SWx deregistration updates when session termination requests are received over SWm or S6b. This can reduce Diameter traffic significantly with certain configurations where lots of clients are not allowed to connect and gateway devices send STRs for these attempts.
  • Removed warnings logged to STDERR by 3GPP AAA Server when processing certain request types. These warnings were harmless but cause unnecessary log entries.
  • 3GPP AAA Server now supports stripping MAC address from NAI format usernames. A new optional configuration parameter StripMACFromUserName controls how this is done.
  • A number of code clean up and maintenance changes were done based on Perl::Critic and other tools.
  • Requires Radiator 4.24 or later and Carrier Module 1.6 or later with 3GPP AAA Server. Radiator 4.24 and later are recommended with plain EAP-SIM, EAP-AKA and EAP-AKA’.
For more information, you can see the Radiator SIM Pack product page or contact us directly at info@radiatorsoftware.com.

Welcome to the Radiator AAA Server Cookbook

Radiator RADIUS server has been around since the early days of Internet service providers. It has and is still been developed together with our customers and partners around the world. In fact, during its lifetime, so much additional functionality and protocols have been added to Radiator, that instead of just RADIUS server, we should talk more about Radiator AAA (Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting) server. Our new extension packs, Radiator SIM Pack and Radiator Diameter Pack, extend Radiator far beyond of just RADIUS and TACACS protocol functionality. Radiator runs and scales from small embedded devices like Raspberry Pi to carrier grade network equipment and server platforms including Linux, UNIX(-like) and Windows server platforms. Radiator can be run on actual hardware or virtualised in the cloud, the major design point being that Radiator is flexible, scalable and interoperable for customers and integrators to be used everywhere in the AAA infrastructure.

The challenge in marketing Radiator is that because it can do almost everything, where should and could we start in describing what the Radiator can be used for. In trade fairs it is always possible to ask the visitors what does their organisation do and then select a suitable pitch or angle for that particular segment. Doing the same on a web page or paper brochures would require us to spend more resources to write and polish content instead of actually doing the development and real things with Radiator.

For years Radiator has been delivered with comprehensive collection of configuration examples called goodies. Our customers appreciate this and that is why we get contributions from them both in code, configurations etc. However for new customers or ones looking for solution for their problems, this functionality and applicability of Radiator is hidden knowledge. In this Radiator Cookbook, we aim to bring forward old and proven recipes as well as new and experimental ones to use Radiator for solving various customer challenges. This will not be a high frequency blog, but more like one where  you can search for recipes, solutions and inspiration how to use Radiator and where to find more information about it.

Welcome.

The Radiator Diameter Pack is now known as Radiator Service Provider Pack.
